426 DAYS OF LEADERSHIP AND ACHIEVEMENTS OF HON. KAREEM SHAKIRU OLATUNDE, AS PRESIDENT OF THE CONGRESS OF NATIONAL OPEN UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA STUDENTS 2023/2024




As we mark 426 days of my administration, I am pleased to reflect on the accomplishments achieved in service to the students of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). Our leadership team has been driven by a commitment to enhance student welfare, academic excellence, and a stronger, united Congress. Below is a summary of our major achievements over the past year.


1.Enhanced Student Representation and Advocacy:- Successfully amplified student voices through consistent dialogues with the university administration, ensuring students’ concerns, particularly around academic support and student welfare, are addressed.

- Strengthened partnerships with key student bodies and organizations nationwide to provide more support networks for our members and boost student representation at all levels.(NANS, AASU,  and NAUS) case of Cassandra Michael a student at Garki Sc Abuja. 


2.Expansion of Student Welfare Programs:- Launched the Student Support Initiative, providing emergency financial aid, pdf books, and materials for underprivileged students to bridge learning gaps.

  -Data empowerment programme to support ease of learning and research. 


3.Academic and Professional Development Opportunities:- Organized over 10 virtual and in-person workshops and seminars on leadership, job readiness, and academic excellence, benefiting thousands of students.

   - Partnered with professionals and alumni to introduce a Mentorship Scheme helping students navigate academic and career challenges with guidance from experienced mentors.


4.Introduction of Digital Communication Platforms:- Developed official communication channels, including a social media platforms, enabling effective updates, announcements, and information sharing.

   - Launched an Online Feedback System where students can submit their issues directly to Congress for swift resolution, improving communication and accountability. ( email,  telegram and X-space) 


5.Strengthened Academic Resources:- Collaborated with the administration to enhance e-learning facilities, including the addition of e-books and learning materials accessible through the NOUN portal.

 - Advocated for additional study centers in underserved areas, ensuring students have access to necessary academic resources and support facilities.


 6.Organization of Key Congress Events:-Successfully hosted the National Students Convention and Congress Election a landmark event bringing students together to discuss issues and elect future leaders.

 - Held the First Annual International Youth Day Celebration** with an emphasis on empowering young voices, fostering unity, and celebrating student diversity.


7. Formation of Strategic Partnerships with Lagos State ministry of sport. 


 8. presentation of the Congress constitution to the management for adoption. 


9.Advocacy for Policy Changes:- Championed the reduction of tuition fees and addressed issues of student access to affordable education, which led to improved support for open and distance learning policies.

   - Worked with governmental bodies and NOUN’s administration to support student-friendly policies, particularly for remote learners who require greater flexibility.


10.Recognition and Awards for Congress Contributions: - Achieved national recognition for NOUN students, with Congress representing at the all Africa incubator expo under my administration and emerging as the 3rd runner up through our pitched project (Nix Data Intelligence) 

 - Strengthened our reputation through various accolades and achievements, motivating current and future students to aspire for excellence.


11.Fact finding visit to the National Assembly of Nigeria and to the North Central coordinator of National Youth service corps (NYSC) for inclusion of NOUN students in the one year mandatory service of the country. 


12. Unscheduled visit to the Joint admission matriculation board (JAMB) headquarter for inquiries into NOUN operating system and regularization modalities. 


Looking Ahead


Our journey is far from over. The leadership of Congress will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that students' voices are heard, their needs are met, and their academic experience is enriched. We are committed to building on these achievements to create an environment where NOUN students thrive, united in purpose and empowered for success.
