A New Dawn for NOUN Students

I receive with great excitement the news that the management of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), under the able leadership of our Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olufemi Peters, has established a Student Welfare Board to cater for the needs and welfare of students. This is a remarkable step forward, and I am proud to associate with this forward-looking initiative.

What makes this development even more gratifying is that one of the board’s first key actions is the formal partnership and adoption of the Congress of NOUN Students (CONS), a national student association that originated from the Ilorin Study Centre under the visionary leadership of our founding leader, Ambassador Abdulrazaq Hamzat, who is currently the Executive Director of the popular peacebuilding think tank, Foundation for Peace Professionals (PeacePro), and others. This is a long-overdue recognition of CONS’s contribution to student welfare and leadership within the university.

Reflecting on my time at NOUN, I am reminded of my own journey within CONS. I had the honor of rising to the position of Senate President — the first female to hold that office — paving the way for my sister, Comrade Rukayat Abolore, who later became the National President of the Congress during the Bayelsa Convention. The advocacy for the official adoption of CONS has been ongoing for over a decade, and it is deeply satisfying to witness this alignment between students and university management at last.

When I was invited to the school after my victory at the poll in 2023, I shared with the university the impact of CONS in training and shaping my perception about leadership. I encouraged them to see CONS as their baby that ought to be embraced rather than cast aside. It is gratifying to see this vision materialize, knowing that the leadership training and discipline CONS instilled in me contributed to my public service journey.

I must commend the leadership of CONS under the current President, Comrade Newland, and the previous leaders, starting from the leading servant, Lurd Bouch, down to the immediate past leader, Comrade Shakirudeen. This is not to forget my leader, Comrade Tijani, Comrade Pelumi, and others for their tireless efforts in sustaining the organization over the years. Their capacity for leadership, organizational strength, discipline, and persistence have kept the Congress alive and relevant. It is a testament to the strength of student leadership at NOUN.

I congratulate the entire student body and urge them to seize this moment to engage more productively, build socially responsible structures, and develop intellectually stimulating leaders. This is an opportunity to elevate NOUN to heights never seen before.

Finally, to truly heal from past misgivings and forge a united path forward, I call on the university to pardon our expelled leaders and issue them their certificates after a decade. These individuals are heroes whose selfless sacrifices and commitment to the betterment of NOUN have inspired countless students. Honoring them will set the foundation for a new beginning, where collective progress and unity will define the future of our great institution.

Rukayat Shittu

Member, Kwara State House of Assembly

Former Senate President, Congress of NOUN Students
